Pink Storage has opened its first fully off-grid self-storage facility, marking a significant step in the company's sustainability efforts.

Located in Washington, England, the facility operates independently of the national electricity grid and is powered by a combination of solar panels, battery storage and backup-generator technology, according to a company announcement.

The renewable-energy system includes 12 solar panels capable of generating 5.4 kilowatt peak power, along with a battery-storage system that can hold up to 72 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity. Together, the components are expected to produce approximately 1,784 kWh of renewable energy annually while reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 0.41 tons per year.

The company invested approximately £40,000 in the project and expects to save about £4,000 annually in energy costs. Pink Storage estimates the system will pay for itself within 10 years while also providing protection from power outages and fluctuating utility costs.

"This is a major step forward for us and the industry," said Scott Evans, CEO and founder of Pink Storage. "The project supports our environmental ambitions and demonstrates how businesses can take control of their energy needs while delivering long-term operational savings."

Pink Storage plans to expand similar off-grid energy systems across its portfolio during the next five years, including at a facility in Nottingham, England.

Founded in 2016, Pink Storage operates more than 20 locations throughout the United Kingdom and offers container-based storage, mobile storage and related services.
