Dead Woman Found In South Carolina Storage Unit
A woman was found dead in her self-storage unit last week. The manager of the facility, Forward Storage located off of Parris Island Gateway in Beaufort, South Carolina, which operated 33 facilities in 14 states, contacted the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) after he found the woman lying on the floor of a storage unit and unresponsive.
The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office concluded through an autopsy that the 46-year-old woman, later identified as Annette Shelton, died from natural causes, although they would not specify beyond that.
Major Matt Averill with the BCSO said that the facility manager believed that Shelton has been living in the unit since November 25. Deputy Coroner Shane Bowers could not say whether or not Shelton had been living in the storage unit or not based off of the information that he had.
In the state of South Carolina, it is illegal to live in or use a self-service storage unit for residential purposes, per Section 39-20-20 of the South Carolina Code of Laws.
