Detectives from the SAPS National Organized Crime Investigation Narcotics Unit have seized a substantial haul of drugs at a self-storage facility in Derdepoort, South Africa.

SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Van Wyk confirmed that the bust took place on Wednesday of last week, with the confiscated substances carrying an estimated street value of R15 million (approximately $821,855).

She added that the operation's success follows a recent breakthrough in which officers dismantled a drug syndicate, leading to the arrest of six suspects on February 11. Charges against two of the suspects have since been provisionally withdrawn.

Van Wyk further stated that follow-up investigations into the syndicate’s activities led officers to the identified storage facility. Preliminary findings suggest that the group was running an online platform to distribute the drugs, most of which was performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).

“Follow-up investigations into this syndicate's activities led the team to the identified storage facility," said Van Wyk. "Preliminary investigations indicate that the syndicate was operating an online platform to trade and distribute scheduled medicine, steroids, stimulants, and other illicit substances to consumers.”

Meanwhile, members of the Wierdabrug Police and the Tshwane District Drug Task Team, also both in South Afria, have arrested a suspect linked to drug-related activities. Captain Johan Van Dyk, spokesperson for the Tshwane District Police, credited the success of the operation to a well-coordinated surveillance effort conducted over time. "Once the suspect’s modus operandi was established and the information verified, the team moved in to apprehend him," he said.

Van Dyk said police discovered five small plastic-wrapped bags containing a white substance, along with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Further investigations led officers to the suspect’s residence in Olievenhoutbosch, where they discovered additional drugs concealed under a pillow.

“Additional drugs were found hidden under a pillow. In total, 83.03 grams of Methcathinone (commonly known as CAT) were seized, along with an undisclosed amount of cash.”

Major-General Samuel Thine, Tshwane District Commissioner, commended the officers for their outstanding work and unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety of the community.
