Investment Real Estate Group of Companies (IREGC) founder and CEO John Gilliland and his wife, Denise, recently closed on the purchase of one of York City’s premier historic buildings – 1 N. George St. – and will transform the beautiful bank building into a vibrant boutique hotel and upscale restaurant.

Rising prominently from the corner of George and Market streets, the three-story, 25,000-square-foot building features elegant Beaux-Arts architecture, inspired by classic Greek and Roman designs. Built in 1929, it includes ornate carved stone, tall arched windows, a highly detailed roofline and 40-foot barrel-vaulted ceilings.

“Located in the heart of downtown York, the Citizens Bank building is a historic landmark that deserves to shine once again as a destination point for residents and guests,” John Gilliland said. “Denise and I are committed to doing our part to help with the city’s impressive and exciting revitalization. We cannot wait to open the doors of this beautiful building once again to our community.”

The Gillilands will work with a hotel management group to design a 20-room boutique hotel with standard rooms and suites. The front of the building will be home to an upscale restaurant that will add a new chapter to the city’s robust culinary offerings. Denise Gilliland is a third-generation member of the DelGrosso family, whose longstanding legacy in the food industry dates back to 1914.

“We look forward to working with talented individuals in the hospitality and restaurant industries to ensure excellence in every aspect,” Denise Gilliland said. “This building is a gem in downtown York, and we are excited to bring it back to life by transforming it into something truly special.”

The couple has made a commitment to supporting York City and the surrounding community. Citizens Bank is the latest purchase of older properties they plan to revitalize, including York’s former 19th-century post office building on the corner of West Philadelphia and Beaver streets near York Central Market. An 1895 three-story red Romanesque structure, it was designed by nationally recognized architect Willoughby J. Edbrooke. Featuring deep stone archways and a corner hexagonal tower with a steep pyramidal roof, it served as the post office until 1912. Denise and John are honored to be stewards of these historic spaces.
