CSSA Releases Legislative Alert Regarding SB709 Pricing Bill
MSM has extensively covered SB709, the California price control bill, with exclusives from the players involved in the fight against it. The CSSA has just released a legislative announcement that you can read in it's entirety below our article timeline of events.

MAY 1: CSSA Continues Fight Against Self-Storage Price Controls
APRIL 16: Battling The New Self-Storage Rent Control Bill
MARCH 9: CSSA & SSA Work To Mitigate Risk Of Rent Control Bill SB709
As you know, CSSA and SSA worked together to change SB 709 from a price control bill to one of disclosure. That bill has passed both houses (Assembly and Senate) and has been sent to the Governor’s desk for signature. Governor Newsom can either veto it or ignore it, which would essentially kill the bill. However, we anticipate with as much support as the bill received, he is most likely to sign it into law – he must do so by October 12, 2025. As of the publishing of this Alert, the bill has not yet been signed.
Once (or if) SB709 is signed into law, CSSA is working with SSA to develop a document outlining the requirements that will be needed for your contracts, beginning January 1, 2026. We will distribute these requirements and post them on our website. In addition, SSA Government Affairs Director, Joe Doherty, along with CSSA Legislative Committee Chair, Steve Mirabito will hold a FREE Peer Power Hour on Wednesday, November 19 at 10:00am to go over all these requirements.
We know everyone is anxious to be notified of these requirements but ask for your patience. We do not want to share anything until we are sure it has been signed into law, and we want to make sure we cover all the elements to give you the correct information. We will distribute this information as soon after it is signed into law.
