Avondale, Arizona Rejects Storage Facility
After residents of Avondale, Ariz., voiced opposition to a new self-storage development, the city of Avondale has rejected an application for a two-story, 110,620-square-foot Extra Space Storage facility. The 2.2-acre site, which is owned by Guardian Storage III LLC, is surrounded by residential neighborhoods.
“This should not be an eyesore in one of the last buildable lots, where we should be putting community enrichment and things that add value,” one resident stated in an interview obtained by ABC15 News. Other residents expressed concerns over the excess of storage facilities in the area.
Although Avondale city staff recommended permit approval, the planning commission denied the application in a 2-2 tie vote on Feb. 21. However, Paul Hedges, who’s connected to the owning entity of the site, plans to appeal the vote and continue his pursuit of the project.
