Daniel Thompson, 48, and Michael Hummel, 30, are accused of breaking into Johnson’s storage unit and several other units at a facility near 24th Street and Indian School Road last week, according to Phoenix police.
Johnson, who played for multiple MLB teams, including Cleveland, Baltimore, San Francisco and Houston, reported losing equipment and apparel collected throughout his baseball career. The stolen items included shirts, hoodies, jackets, shorts, batting gloves and hats associated with multiple teams.
Detectives reportedly learned that the suspects had attempted to sell a pair of shoes allegedly stolen from the storage unit, helping investigators connect them to the burglary.
Police also said managers at the facility recognized the two men as suspects in a separate burglary at another Phoenix self-storage property.
The case highlights ongoing security concerns for self-storage operators, particularly as facilities house valuable personal property and collectibles.
