Fire Damages Units at Virginia Beach Storage Facility
Firefighters battled a blaze Tuesday evening at Potter Self Storage, a facility located on North Great Neck Road, after flames tore through at least one unit and threatened to spread to neighboring spaces.
The fire was reported shortly after 6 p.m., drawing a rapid response from Virginia Beach Fire Department crews. When firefighters arrived, smoke was already billowing from a row of storage units. Crews forced entry to contain the flames, attacking the fire from both inside and out to prevent it from spreading further.
Officials said the blaze was confined primarily to one unit, though adjacent spaces suffered smoke and heat damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Investigators remained on scene late into the evening, working to determine the cause.
Facility tenants arrived throughout the night to check on their belongings, some staring grimly at the charred metal doors. One renter, visibly shaken, said she stored furniture, clothing, and family keepsakes inside. “I just hope something’s salvageable,” she said quietly as smoke still curled from the structure.
The fire highlights the growing concerns around fire safety in self-storage environments. While storage units are built to contain individual incidents, shared walls and flammable contents can turn a single spark into a costly disaster.
Virginia Beach officials have not yet released the estimated damages. The facility remained closed to tenants overnight as cleanup and investigation continued.
