Dead Pets Intended for Cremation Discovered in Colorado Storage Unit
Police in Colorado Springs say they uncovered deceased pets inside a rented storage unit that was supposed to be used for cremation services.
The discovery came after officers responded to a complaint from a tenant at Extra Space Storage who reported a foul odor coming from a neighboring unit. Believing it could be a human body, police obtained permission to enter. Inside, they found a cooler filled with animal remains. Authorities did not specify how many pets were recovered.
Investigators later contacted the unit’s renter, identified as the operator of a pet cremation service. According to police, the animals were meant to undergo a communal cremation that never took place. The remains have since been removed.
On Friday, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region confirmed the storage unit is linked to an individual named Marcus Williams. Local station KKTV noted that the same name had surfaced from multiple concerned pet owners and a Colorado Springs veterinarian.
Dr. Melissa Vollaire of Transitions Veterinary Service said she had recently partnered with Williams to handle cremation services. But she ended the arrangement in August, citing what she described as “several red flags.”
After cutting ties, Vollaire said she was left with at least six dogs that had not been cremated. The remains, she explained, were returned to her in advanced stages of decomposition, without refrigeration or preservation.
The Humane Society said its staff is working to identify the recovered pets and will reach out to affected families. Officials advised anyone worried about their pet’s aftercare to contact the veterinary clinic or facility where arrangements were originally made.
At this point, Colorado Springs Police say the matter is not being treated as a criminal investigation.
