DeSantis Signs Bill Eliminating Lease Tax For Self-Storage Businesses
On June 30, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 7031 (HB 7031) into law, thus eliminating the state’s lease tax for commercial businesses, including self-storage. Supported by the Florida Self Storage Association (FSSA) and Self Storage Association (SSA), the legislation takes effect on Oct. 1, 2025.
HB 7031 also eliminates the ability of local governments to add their own levy. Self-storage operators are encouraged to contact their taxing authority or accountant for confirmation. According to an email from the SSA about the announcement, the new law doesn’t impact the tax for storing motor vehicles in parking lots or garages, or for boats at docks or marinas.
