A Family Business With Top-Notch Service Cannon Storage Systems, Inc.
Lawton, Okla.-based Canon Storage Systems, Inc., is a second-generation family-owned business with humble beginnings. The turn-key building supplier and construction service company, which was formed in 1979 by Vern Cannon, began as a one-man operation from a home office. Prior to constructing his first self-storage facility that year, Vern was working as a commercial contractor. That was the beginning of his new focus as Vern and Cannon Storage received a steady stream of calls for self-storage construction after finishing that facility.
In 2011, Vern handed the company’s reigns—albeit somewhat reluctantly—over to his two children, David and Starr, president and vice president, respectively. Although he’s no longer at the office full time, Vern continues to strengthen Cannon Storage System’s business by passing his knowledge and experiences down to David and Starr, who both grew up on self-storage construction sites.
As a matter of fact, Starr was installing roofs and partitions at the age of 15. However, nowadays she most enjoys interacting with clients she met on job sites as a kid. “Building relationships is my favorite aspect of the job,” says Starr. “We are very concerned with relationships and treat our clients like family. We fight for our clients with fair prices too.”
And, according to Starr, most of the company’s new and repeat clients have been very receptive to the more relaxed atmosphere that David’s personality has created. “David has a quiet confidence that makes him a good leader and president,” she says. “He is diplomatic, honest, and hands-on.” Starr adds that, much like their father, David is a perfectionist as well.
Their invaluable attributes, along with their longstanding relationships, many of which were initially formed by Vern more than three decades ago, have enabled Cannon Storage Systems, Inc., to expand its reach to new markets, working across the entire U.S. and within Canada. After the company became incorporated in 2011, Cannon Storage was steadily busy with a mix of smaller and medium size projects. As the recession of 2008 subsided, Cannon saw their project board start to build up in 2014, with mainly larger projects. And although the company wishes to remain a small family business, to meet the demand of both current clients and prospective customers, it has added two new construction crews to its business in order to keep up with the surge in self-storage development projects.
With a commitment to excellence, Cannon Storage’s in-house crews follow David’s expertise, building to his detailed specifications. One of those crews is overseen by Starr and David’s cousin, who also grew up around construction; his time spent working side-by-side with David shaped him into an admirable leader. In addition to relatives, many of Cannon Storage’s employees have been with the company long term. In fact, one foreman has been with Cannon Storage for more than 12 years, working alongside David for many of those years. The longevity of its employees is just one more way that Cannon Storage provides incomparable service as clients can build rapport with crew members and staff alike.
“We feel like we have some of the best crews around,” says Starr, who adds that the company’s office staff is also top-notch. “Not only our crews are the best in the business, but the office staff as well. Brinda is your first contact by telephone. She is always cheerful and that disposition sets the tone for our conversations. Gary is our AutoCAD expert, but that is not his only attribute. He is our IT guy, design guru, and all around office professional. He is the point of contact for most of our projects. We are complimented often on his professionalism and knowledge.”

From facility design to the actual construction, and everything in between, Cannon Storage Systems has the know-how and skills necessary to take your self-storage project from concept to completion, with a history of providing high-quality, low-maintenance self-storage units. Cannon Storage System’s prefabricated and pre-engineered building exteriors are built for both durability and efficiency. Constructed of 16-gauge galvaneal steel piers and headers, the exteriors are available in a wide array of standard colors with either a smooth, baked-on enamel finish or a masonry textured finish.
Speaking of finishes, Cannon Storage also offers first-rate building solutions to enhance curb appeal. The company’s masonry textured finish, which complies with most local government regulations in regards to the exterior façade for commercial buildings, creates an attractive, Class-A facility appearance. In addition, Cannon Storage System’s piers can be reversed and filled with brick for a refined quality that blends well within many residential communities. Furthermore, the company stays on top of self-storage building trends to provide the latest and greatest construction materials, designs, and techniques.
Quality And Care
Cannon Storage Systems has been committed to superior quality at reasonable rates since its inception. Cannon Storage is dedicated to former clients as well. Its staff and crews don’t finish jobs and just walk away; they continue to check in with clients after projects are completed to ensure everything is still in working order. In other words, the company concentrates on customer satisfaction. The Cannons want every self-storage developer who hires them for their job to have the best experience possible. And considering the fact that roughly 80 percent of Cannon Storage’s new customers come from word-of-mouth referrals, it’s safe to say that the Cannon family and the company’s crews are doing something right.
Besides exceptional service, two items every self-storage developer can appreciate are promptness and cost savings. Cannon Storage Systems prides itself on being able to provide both. “We’ve completed every job since 1979 ahead of time and on budget,” Vern states. And a track record like that is hard to come by!
Furthermore, the staff at Cannon Storage keeps the lines of communication open for past, present, and potential clients. They are always available for any questions that may arise throughout the entire construction process, from the planning stage to long after a facility’s grand opening.
Therefore, if you are seeking a reputable company with can-do crews and friendly staff who go out of their way to make you feel like part of their family, look no further! Cannon Storage Systems, Inc., has the ability and fortitude to make your next self-storage development project a successful and less stressful experience from start to finish.
