Louisiana Self-Storage Fire Sends Two Firefighters To The Hospital

A fire broke out at early Sunday morning, May 19, at Storage Rentals of America, located at 11500 South Harrells Ferry Road near South Sherwood Forest Boulevard. The Baton Rouge Fire Department, with help from the St. George Fire Department, responded to the call, arriving at the scene at 5:17am. 

 

Upon arrival, heavy smoke and fire was seen coming from the rear of the building, according to reports. DOTD traffic cameras on I-12 at Sherwood Forest also showed a plume of smoke coming from the facility and the fire department’s presence at the scene.

A spokesman with the Baton Rouge Fire Department confirmed the blaze turned into a second alarm fire around 7 a.m. but only one building was involved. It is believed the fire began in or around the first-floor entrance before it extended into several units on both floors.

 

Officials say nearly half of the units and their contents in the building were damaged by the fire while the remaining units and contents sustained significant smoke and water damage.

 

Two firefighters were transported to a local hospital for dehydration. Currently, the the cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.
