String of Self-storage break-ins plague nY counties

A string of self-storage unit break-ins have been plaguing Lewis County, New York.

According to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, there have been a total of 10-15 units broken into across five different facilities over the last week. However, investigators suspect there are more cases out there and tenant and management are just not aware of it yet. This could be because in some cases, the locks were broken and replaced with new ones.

“I’m asking people to check their storage units within our county and any adjacent county and then report it through our office,” said Investigator James Blackwell, Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

Blackwell added that he knows there have been similar break-ins in surrounding areas such as Jefferson and Oneida County. “There’s a bunch that haven’t been reported yet," he says. "[People] haven’t made it to their storage units yet, or haven’t checked them.”

If you discover a unit that has been broken into, call the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office at 315-376-3511 or its anonymous tip line at 315-377-2020.

Meanwhile, better security cameras are coming to some storage facilities. CMC Storage, one of the facilities that suffered a break-in, told reporters that the facility is now investing in new surveillance cameras.
