A-1 Self Storage Makes Monetary Donation to the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego

A-1 Self Storage, the premier provider of self storage in San Diego, announced today their monetary support to the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego’s “Big Stage Ballroom Fundraiser.” The annual event is an effort to raise money and awareness of Parkinson’s Disease. This theatrical dance show features dance professionals and students (including local Parkinson’s doctors) as they perform a variety of dance numbers to the sounds of musical legends. All proceeds from this event fund research and vital programs and services to local Parkinson’s families.

Parkinson’s Disease is included in a group of neurological conditions referred to as motor system disorders. Parkinson’s was first called “the shaking palsy” by British doctor James Parkinson in 1817. The disease was named after Parkinson because of his early work in identifying symptoms. In a normal brain, the chemical dopamine is produced by some of the nerve cells. Dopamine is responsible for transmitting signals that tell the brain to produce smooth muscle movements. For those with Parkinson’s, 80 percent, and more of the cells that produce dopamine have been damaged, are degenerate, or dead. This results in nerve cells that fire wildly, preventing patients from being able to control their movements. Symptoms normally appear in one, and possibly more of the following ways:

• Trembling, or tremor, in arms, hands, face, jaw, face and legs • Stiffness, or rigidity within the trunk or limbs • Slowness of movement, or bradykinesia • Impaired coordination and balance, postural instability

While full-blown Parkinson’s Disease may be crippling or disabling, early symptoms are often gradual, and so subtle that they are ignored, or considered to be part of aging. In the earliest stages, patients may experience fatigue, a sense of being down, or a little shaky. They may experience irritability for no apparent reason, movements can be slow, and unsteady, and speech may soften.

“We are honored to support the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego. We thank the doctors, nurses, researchers, and social workers who assist the patients and their families who are suffering from this disease” said Brian Caster, President and CEO of A-1 Self Storage.
